Paris Saint-Germain secure out-of-favor Barcelona midfielder.

New Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Rafinha Alcantara signed for the French Champions on the transfer deadline day. It looked like the midfielder would stay at Barcelona as his contract was up in 2020 but a last-minute deal in a frenzy of a deadline day saw the midfielder become a PSG player.

Barcelona let Rafinha go for 3 million euros in a last-minute sale which will not only help them increase their transfer budget but also remove the Brazilian from their wage bill. The Blaugrana will also receive 35 percent of any future sales made by the Parisiens.

Rafinha was sent on loan multiple times since his injury. He was sent to Inter Milan on one occasion and he played as a Celta Vigo player for the 2019/20 season. He is not exactly a world-class midfielder but he was good enough to be kept around in the Barcelona squad, as the club hopes for him to develop even further.

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United were apparently interested in the 27-year-old midfielder before he signed for the Ligue 1 champions. The Brazilian signed for Thomas Tuchel’s side after reaching personal terms for a contract that lasts till 2023.

Rafinha had been at the Nou Camp for 14 years before he was sent away to his first loan move to Celta Vigo in the 2013/14 season. He returned to the Nou Camp in 2015 where he mainly played as a substitute until another move to Inter Milan in 2018. The Brazilian was a La Masia graduate, joining them when he was 13 years of age, alongside his brother Thiago Alcantara.

Thomas Tuchel is apparently a huge admirer of the midfielder and it looks like he will get regular football over at Parc des Princes. He will also get to play with his close friend Neymar Jr in the French capital, as the pair got very close during their time together in Spain.

The deal was an outstanding upgrade for Rafinha as he was getting next to no football in Barcelona. He won multiple trophies with the La Liga giants but had very little contribution. A move to France is an exquisite move for the midfielder at the age of 27, given the fact that he might be part of the main team and play with the likes of Marco Veratti and Idrissa Gana Gueye.
