Former Arsenal playmaker, Paul Merson, reckons that Manchester City and Manchester United should have gone for this Arsenal signing.
Arsenal according to former player, Paul Merson, has degraded a lot over the years. The club that used to ooze of class now is just a shadow of its former self. Merson wrote in his DailyStar column that the only club that ever went invincible the whole season has really degraded due to the management of the board. Arsenal is no longer a club known for winning trophies but rather just another source of income for the owners. However, in between his criticism, Merson said that he was genuinely happy with Arsenal’s signings and on-field performances.
Merson said that he was genuinely impressed by Mikel Arteta’s efforts to change the dimension of Arsenal’s playing style and the results show us that the Spanish master mind’s vision and philosophy are actually working. The club won three of their four matches in the Premier League as of now and they showed good character in the win against Liverpool in the League Cup.
The former Gunner was especially impressed by the signing of 27 year Thomas Partey. The Ghanaian midfielder was wanted by a lot of big clubs and was linked with Arsenal for a long time. Although it seemed like the North Londoners would miss out on the strong defensive midfielder due to insufficient funding, they pulled through in the last moment and signed him for 45 million pounds. His wages are quite high, 150,000 a week and to accommodate that, they had to let go of their club mascot.
Partey is a solid individual who possesses immense strength and ball holding capacity. He is similar to the likes of N’golo Kante, with brilliant intercepting qualities and vision to find accurate passes, he was exactly what the London side was missing. He used to have a big presence in Atletico Madrid’s midfield as he used to command the area with his tackling and ball-winning abilities. There was a reason as to why Diego Simeone was unwilling to let go of the player but they finally succumbed to the financial crisis caused by the pandemic.
Merson is extremely happy with the signing and said that he was surprised as to why clubs like Manchester City and Manchester United did not go for the vice-captain of Ghana’s national team. At the age of just 27, the player will be able to serve Arsenal for at least five to six years and his presence on the pitch will surely be noticed by all the teams in the Premier League.
