Former Spurs and United striker Dimitar Berbatov gave his take on the versatile Manchester United no. 9, and how he could improve his form and current goal scoring record for the Red Devils.
Berbatov believes French sensation Anthony Martial still has a lot to give to this new-look Manchester United attack and has challenged him to step up and look to the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of sheer productivity and number of goals.
Inconsistency has plagued Martial throughout his United career, with him showing flashes of brilliance in some games only to follow up with terribly average performances in others, so there have always been question marks over whether he can make the number 9 role his own and produce the kind of results expected from him.
The 24-year old forward was recently criticized by ex-United midfielder Paul Scholes who said Martial “conned” and mislead people into thinking he was a natural forward with his amazing form and goal contributions towards the end of last season.
Berbatov shared his own thoughts on the matter, talking to Betfair he said:
“I saw some comments from (Paul) Scholes and he was critical of Anthony Martial, and my opinion of him is well known now, he may never be the out and out no 9, he prefers to come in from the wing, doing his tricks and drawing fouls. The only criticism is that he isn’t as consistent as he could be. He isn’t brilliant in every game, and until he is consistent, it is hard to describe him as world-class.”
He also stated that it wasn’t just Martial underperforming but the whole United team, and as soon as some players pick up their form and start supporting him more, the goals will flow automatically start flowing. Martial is yet to open his account for the 20-21 season and with new signing Edinson Cavani now waiting in the wings, time may soon be running out for Martial to nail down that central striker spot.
