Liverpool needs to find a solution after losing their key defender.

Liverpool suffered a huge blow when defender Virgil Van Dijk was subbed off due to a tackle by Jordan Pickford. The Dutch international will be sidelined for the next six or seven months. Jurgen Klopp’s men will be hoping to retain the Premier League title this season but the job is now extremely tough without their star defender. According to reports by Goal, Liverpool are looking for possible replacements at the back and it includes RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano.

The France international was linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer but the deal did not proceed to the latter stages. Liverpool has Joe Gomez, Fabinho and Joel Matip as center back options and it is quite evident that the Merseyside club will be looking to add another option at the back to resolve the fixture congestion. Upamecano is currently one of the best young defenders in the world and the French star is very good aerially and an excellent leader. Van Dijk’s ball-playing ability is extremely good and Liverpool will be hoping to get such similar attributes from the French defender.

Dayot reached the semi final of the UEFA Champions League last season. He dropped an excellent performance against Atletico Madrid and was unlucky to get knocked out by PSG. The Reds are one of the favorites for the title this season and will be looking to win their second Champions League in 3 years. Jurgen Klopp will be needing the fourth center back in order to go to the latter stages. Upamecano can form a center back pairing with Joel Matip and Fabinho is deployed as the defensive midfielder. The Brazil international can drop back and act as the third center back during defensive transition.

However, the main problem with the transfer will be the player’s hefty transfer fee and Liverpool will be looking to find a reliable solution to have the best chance for winning both the Premier League and the Champions League this season.
