Mourinho was very critical about his players after they gave away a three-goal lead to West Ham on their home ground.
Tottenham Hotspurs in a very ‘Spursy’ manner managed to somehow throw away a three-goal lead in a matter of 10 minutes. The north Londoners were dominant all game and scored three goals in the first 16 minutes of the game courtesy of Son Heung-min and Harry Kane but gave away that lead in a ridiculous fashion in the last 10 minutes of the match. Mourinho believes his players were not “psychologically strong” enough to resist West Ham’s relentless push near the end.
The match began very favorably for the Lily Whites but a goal from Fabian Balbuena, an own goal from Davinson Sanchez, and finally a stunning strike from Manuel Lanzini meant that the Hammers would be going home with a point secured. The Portuguese manager was rightly fuming at the players but instead of pinning the blame upon someone particular, he called out the entire team for having a weak mentality. In an interview with Sky Sports, he said,
It is not easy to be losing 3-0 and be dominated, to keep the belief. I knew they are a different team to last season, but to lose an advantage of three goals is a big punishment and eventually deserved.
My guys were not strong enough to cope with it psychologically. The last few seconds we lost two points.”
He also talked about the match on BBC Sports,
We should be stronger. In the second half they risked quite a lot, pressing up and gave us more space. We should get an occasion to win the game.”
The North London side have not had the best of starts to the League and they find themselves sitting in the seventh-place after five games. The fans will be hoping for some silverware this season as the appointment of Jose Mourinho last season showed that the club was finally willing to end their trophy drought. The addition of Gareth Bale from Real Madrid also shows their determination but if they keep throwing away games like this they might have to wait a few more years before they can add any new trophies to their shelves.
