Lionel Messi’s lack of goals is an issue for Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman

This season clearly hasn’t been off to a good start for the Catalans. With the 3 bad outcomes in a row, and a significant loss against La Liga champions and rivals, Real Madrid, at 3-1.  Barcelona went trophyless last season and have a shaky start this season as well.

From the looks of it, Messi is still finding his footing with the new coach, who remains unimpressed with his performance so far. With the draw against Sevilla and the 1-0 loss at Sevilla, the variations in the formation of the players definitely raise some questions.

Ideally, the most suitable position for the club captain seems to be in the hole with young Ansu Fati ahead. The 33-year-old is still playing his dangerous game but he has not managed to score from open play this season, which seems to have disappointed the Boss, Koeman.

In the past season, the Argentine national has become a master at assists and brilliant passes that lead to game-changing outcomes. However, his opportunities to score goals are getting lower, which could inadvertently lead to a huge problem at Camp Nou, where the team is known to be overly reliant on Messi for goals.

Koeman has a different strategy from his predecessor, Quique Setien, and demands excellence from the G.O.A.T.  The issue is Messi’s age, where he can’t make runs and cuts the way he used to in his youth.

The Dutchman used Messi as a false no. 9 in the clashes against Villareal, Sevilla, and Celta Vigo but due to Leo’s pace, he was unable to recreate the astonishing form he once had under Pep Guardiola. The 57-year-old then put Antoine Griezmann forward and Messi to the right but with a lackluster performance from the Frenchman, Koeman was left disappointed once again.

Maybe, at the moment, Messi’s performances could be better.” Koeman told reporters.

We just have to wait and see whether the 6 time Ballon d’Or winner regains his form this season in time to impress Koeman.
