In wake of the entire board resigning, Josep Maria Bartomeu has resigned as the president of Barcelona.

After months of speculation surrounding the presidency and an early election suggestion, the President of Barcelona has finally submitted his resignation.

Earlier this year, Bartomeu came under a lot of criticism for making questionable decisions that led to the loss of younger talents, all in favor of balancing the books. Calls for his resignation were made by fans and even a vote of no confidence was made.

Along with his resignation, the whole of the Barcelona board will also be bowing out and leaving their posts.

Last season after Barcelona abysmal 8-2 loss against Bayern Munich, in a season that was trophyless for the Blaugranas; the loss to the german giants was the final nail in the coffin, that even led to Lionel Messi‘s decision to exit his boyhood club.

After his reluctance to take his club for 16 years to court, Messi remained for another season but he was very vocal about his dissatisfaction with the club’s board and presidentship.

Even after the sacking of Quique Setien, the club needed a restructuring at all management levels and calls for a new board were made. The President had been under scrutiny for many months now, with so many losses and disappointing performances by the team, along with a bad transfer season.

Officially, the 57-year old’s tenure would end in 2021, but club members wanted him out this season and thus the vote of no confidence was called, which gathered 20,687 votes, which surpassed the minimum 16,250 that are required.

The board, however, was reluctant to call for a vote and kept trying to postpone but were finally pushed by local authorities who, on Monday, declined the appeal to delay the proceedings any further. Thus, the vote was supposed to be held in the coming weeks but with the entire board having stepped down, it will no longer be necessary.

With this, Bartomeu ends his 7-year reign after having joined in 2014. We’ll have to wait and see what a new presidentship and Board to support Messi in his endeavor to win the Champions League after a trophyless season. Barcelona play against Juventus next in the Champions League.
