Barcelona connections saving Pep Guardiola’s job at Manchester City.

Manchester City boss Josep Pep Guardiola is apparently very lucky to still have his job with the Citizens, according to German football coach Dietmar Hamann. The Spaniard has been at Manchester for 5 years now which is longer than any other spell he’s had at any other club and that includes his world-class Barcelona side and his extremely strong Bayern Munich team.

It is currently Pep Guardiola’s fifth-year in charge at Manchester City and there have been many talks about him having to extend his stay at the Etihad. City have also looked at potential replacements in Julian Nagelsman and Leicester City’s Brendan Rodgers in case the Catalan decides to leave the club.

However, German football coach Dietmar Hamann thinks that Pep Guardiola is extremely lucky to have been still backed by the owners. The Manchester side has failed to win the league three times in a row last season as Liverpool won the league after 30 years with an 18 point gap. City’s start to the current season too, has been disastrous as Guardiola’s men have recorded just 8 points in 5 games which is their lowest since the 2014/15 season under Manuel Pellegrini.

If you look at their record in the Champions League, any other manager would’ve been in big bother, obviously he’s got some Barcelona history in the boardroom and maybe that’s why he’s still there. ” Hamann told talkSPORT

“He didn’t reach a final with Bayern Munich or Man City – and if you look at the teams who did, they don’t have the same funds. It’s simply not good enough. If you look at the teams who beat them, I just wonder what has to happen for them to make a change.”

Even after spending endless amounts of money during the transfer windows and receiving the full support of the board, the Catalan has failed to deliver a UEFA Champions League trophy which has been a goal at the Etihad for quite a while now. Inside 5 years, which is his longest spell for a club, the former Barcelona manager has failed to take Manchester City past the quarter-finals in all of his four seasons in England.

The fans and the players all are extremely fond of him. Pep is an iconic figure in football and at some level, City and their whole family feel lucky to be led by such an iconic man in the history of the game. However, the facts are always there to burst the bubble as the UEFA Champions League is a huge priority for the club and in their last decade of success, they have failed to land the title. Hopefully, they will go for it one more time with Pep Guardiola as this might very well be his last season at the club.

Guardiola and his men will really be looking to make a huge upgrade this season and prove all the doubters wrong as they are not a side who sit quietly and listen. They are a fantastic group of staff and players who are more than capable of winning the European glory.
