Bayern Munich manager believes that David Alaba will remain at the club although speculations suggest otherwise.
Bayern Munich star defender, David Alaba, has left his future up for speculation after having a public feud with former Bayern Munich president and current member of the board, Uli Hoeness. Alaba’s deal expires next summer and Liverpool are one of the teams that are very likely to pick up the Austrian defender should he decide against signing a new contract with the German giants. Manager, Hans-Dieter Flick, however, believes that Alaba could be persuaded to stay with Bayern and he is certainly hoping that Liverpool does not gain another amazing player due to this controversy.
The feud started between the player’s father and the board because former president, Uli Hoeness, decided to accuse the player of being only interested in money. This is due to the tight negotiations that are currently going on for the renewal of the player’s contract which will end after the current season. Hoeness’ remarks made Alaba’s father, George Alaba, extremely angry towards the board and accused them of spreading lies and rumors.
This is obviously going to affect Alaba’s decision but the manager, Flick, still believes that Bayern is the club for Alaba. Flick says that the controversy and transfer rumors has not affected the player’s on field performance and says that the defender is playing as good as he was playing last season. In a news conference ahead of Saturday’s match, he said,
Against [Arminia] Bielefeld, Atletico [Madrid] and Eintracht [Frankfurt], Alaba is doing a good job.”
“I feel he’s the same as last season, very focused, loud on the pitch, one of the players who leads our defence. For me, there’s no difference between now and last season.”
Flick hopes that the 28-year-old will extend his contract and says that the player knows the benefits of staying with the German side.
It’s a lot of fun to train with a team with a good atmosphere here, we play successful football and this club is one of the best in the world.”
“The conditions are top for every player right now and I think he’ll think twice about changing that.”
However, the manager also added that the club cannot force him to stay, and ultimately the decision is the player’s to make. Flick also added that although he would love to keep him, he will respect the decision he makes by the end of the season. Alaba has made a decent start to the season although his stats are a bit lower than his previous seasons’. Alaba has started in four of the six Bundesliga matches but he still seems like the first choice center-back alongside either Niklas Sule or Jerome Boateng.
His loss would be very dear to the treble winners as the player is very versatile and can play all over the defense and midfield areas. Should they lose him, Liverpool are the most likely candidates to scoop him up. The English champions already picked up Thiago Alcantara and may now add a brilliant defender to their squad for free.
