After an unsuccessful negotiation, Bundesliga champions and UEFA Champions League holders, Bayern Munich have decided to end talks with the defender.

David Alaba has been a pivotal point in the defense of Bayern Munich for many years. The Austrian alongside Jerome Boateng made one of the most solid defences in all of Europe. This partnership is now in jeopardy as Alaba has failed to reach an agreement for a contract renewal with the club. The Bundesliga holders made a “fair and competitive” offer to the center-back and gave him a deadline of 31st October to decide. After Alaba’s agent revealed o the club that the defender still finds the offer unsatisfactory, the club decided to end negotiations, leaving Alaba’s future up to speculation.

The 28-year-old has been with the Bayern family since 2008, first with their youth development center then he made the senior team in 2010. Alaba has made more than 400 appearances for the German club since joining the first team. The center-back who can also play on any of the flanks or even be all over the midfield, has been one of the most consistent performers for the club and his versatility has helped him become one of the favorites with every manager. Flick also wanted to keep the player and heaped praises upon him. The manager said that Alaba had distanced himself from the controversies and is very dedicated in training sessions. He also mentioned that the Austrian was playing as good as the previous season.

The controversy first arose when Alaba’s father, George Alaba, had a public quarrel with one of the board members of Bayern Munich, Uli Hoeness. The former president and current member accused the player of being only interested in money and Alaba’s father hit back at the club by saying Hoeness was spreading “dirty lies” about his son. Hoeness also targeted Alaba’s agent calling him a “greedy piranha.”

These words made the defender come out with a public statement that his demands were not unjustifiable but were instead fair. Bayern does not believe so and the negotiations have formally ended. Should the club refuse to send any more offers, Alaba is free to leave at the end of the season. This would mean a big loss to the German champions as the player is still only 28 and has many years to give. Also by letting him go they could be reinforcing a direct rival in the name of, Liverpool.

The English club has been keeping a close eye on the situation and could end up grabbing him for free. The English champions already took Thiago Alcantara from Bayern and should they manage to get one more talent from the reds, it would be very favorable for them and very unfavorable for the Germans.
