Expected lineup for Borussia Dortmund against Brugge in their crucial Champions League clash
The Champions League is back in action which sees Borussia Dortmund face Club Brugge in an all-important match in Group F.
Dortmund are currently riding a good wave of form in the Bundesliga with consecutive wins against arch-rivals Schalke and a comfortable 2-0 win over league newcomers Arminia Bielefeld. Surprisingly, for a team which in recent years has been known to be defensively shaky, have the best defensive record in the Bundesliga this season with only 2 goals conceded in 6 games.
Their Champions League run, on the other hand, has been pretty inconsistent, with a 2-0 away loss to Lazio followed by a 2-0 victory over them at Westfalenstadion. They will now be looking to bounce back against the Belgian side, Brugge FC, to get their Champions League campaign back on track.
Let us take a look at how head coach Lucien Favre could possibly line up against the Belgian outfit.
Expected Starting XI (4-2-3-1):
Goalkeeper: Roman Burki
Right Back: Thomas Meunier
Centre Back(right): Manuel Akanji
Centre Back(left): Thomas Delaney
Left Back: Raphael Guerreiro
Defensive Midfield (left): Axel Witsel
Defensive Midfield (right): Jude Bellingham
Right Winger: Jadon Sancho
Attacking Midfielder: Marco Reus
Left-winger: Giovanni Reyna
Center forward: Erling Haaland
Roman Burki will remain between the posts as the Swiss International will be the undisputed starter, with Marwin Hitz available as the backup option. Defensive talisman Mats Hummels who was in great form the last game netting both the goals against Arminia Bielefeld unfortunately had to go off the field during the game due to a hamstring injury. He will be a huge loss for the German side’s defense which has looked great since the start of the campaign.
He is expected to be replaced by the tenacious Danish International, Thomas Delaney, who did a great job of filling in at center back for a couple of games, despite it not being his natural position on the field. Portuguese international Raphael Guerreiro was rested for the previous game, and so he will be slotted back into the left-back position. Although Spaniard Mateu Morey could enjoy some playing time, Thomas Meunier will most likely continue in the right-back position.
Providing cover for the backline will be the ever-reliable Axel Witsel, and the extremely talented youngster, Jude Bellingham who had a great game against the Bundesliga newcomers in his box to box role.
Meanwhile, Giovanni Reyna is expected to start on the left of a front three, flanked by Jadon Sancho on the right, and Marco Reus playing as the number 10 right behind the striker. The attack, of course, will be spearheaded by the Norwegian goal machine Erling Haaland.
The Swiss tactician will also have a very strong bench at his disposal featuring the likes of Julian Brandt, Thorgan Hazard, and Mahmoud Dahoud who can change the course of any game. It remains to be seen how he manages his available substitutions during the game.
