Ajax’s defensive talent to solve defensive problems at Liverpool
Liverpool are interested in bringing 20-year-old Dutch centre back, Perr Schuurs, from Ajax following his impressive display against them last month in the UEFA Champions League reports The Mirror.
Schuurs has already started in every game for Ajax this season and it finally looks like Ajax have been able to replace their star centre back, Matthijs De Ligt, who left the club last year for a reported price of €75 million to the Italian champions, Juventus. But it remains to be seen for how long he stays at the club following interest from the premier league champions Liverpool.
The 20-year-old standing at 6ft 3inches tall has already made 21 first-team appearances for the Dutch side, having stepped up under Erik ten Hag. His composure on the ball and authority he displays on the pitch has earned him comparisons to his national team captain Virgil Van Dijk.
The Fortuna Sittard academy product had a trial at Anfield in 2018 where even though he impressed everyone at the club it was felt he should stay in Holland to continue his development. The Reds have been monitoring his journey since then and can now finally make their official move for him this January given the injury problems they have.
It’s been a tough start to the season for the Premier League champions in terms of injuries, they are already down to bare bones in defence with only one fit centre back in Joe Gomez, with makeshift centre back Fabinho out injured and Joel Matip still recovering from a muscle injury he suffered against Everton, Klopp has had to play academy players in Rhys Williams and Nat Philipps. The decision to not go for a centre back after selling Dejan Lovren has surely come back to haunt them and Klopp would certainly want to add a new face this January given Van Dijk is out for the season and Liverpool have the worst defensive record in the PL this season conceding 15 goals in 7 games already.
A centre back position is the main priority Klopp’s side this January transfer window, Perr Schuurs will certainly be one of the names currently being discussed by the Premier League champions to bring on this January.
