Father confirms star already had Liverpool transfer agreement before PSG came in
Speaking in an interview with France Football , Mazinho the father of Thiago and Rafinha Alcantara explained that PSG Sporting Director Leonardo tried to sign the ex-Bayern Munich man, but ended up getting his other son instead.
Mazinho who won the World cup and Copa America with Brazil confirmed that his former team-mate Leonardo wanted to sign Thiago but the midfielder had already reached an agreement with Liverpool.
I had spoken with Leonardo a while ago for Thiago. There was already an agreement with Liverpool. Rafinha came up, but was unplanned. Everything accelerated on the final day. Leonardo wanted Thiago, he got Rafinha. For Rafa, it was a dream to join such a club.”
Rafinha was one of the casualties of Barcelona’s big squad overhaul this season which saw many prominent members including the likes of Luis Suarez, Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal and Nelson Semedo leave the club.
The former Brazilian international however believes his son would feel right at home in Paris as there are plenty of similarities between PSG and Barcelona, although he does admit Rafinha would need time to understand Tuchel’s demands but believes he is tactically well prepared and will adapt quickly.
It was certainly a busy summer for the Alcantara family with both the brothers earning new moves, but Mazinho seems delighted with how it ended up for both of his sons.
Thiago has already shown glimpses of his talent at Liverpool, although Covid-19 and an injury he suffered against Everton have limited his appearances to only 2 this season, whilst Rafinha has won the opportunity to receive more regular playing time for the Parisiens having played 5 games already this season.
It remains to be seen whether PSG made a mistake by not approaching Thiago earlier before it was too late and deciding to end up with his brother Rafinha instead. That is something only time will tell.
