Lionel Messi arriving at Manchester City might not be all perfect.

Former Manchester City forward Emile Mpenza thinks that a potential move for Lionel Messi to the City of Manchester Stadium can be a bad idea. The Belgian has stated that a reunion between the Argentine and his former coach Josep Pep Guardiola might not be as good as the fans or the people at the club think. However, he stated that this possible reunion would be a very good idea if the two linked up at MLS in the United States of America after they’re both done with their top-flight careers in Europe.

“I think that with all the defensive problems [Pep] Guardiola has, he doesn’t really need someone like Messi. He should sort the leaky defence out first.”

Lionel Messi had officially handed in a transfer request to leave Barcelona in the 2020 summer transfer window. Multiple reports suggested that his destination would be Manchester City to work under Josep Pep Guardiola and play alongside his Argentine teammate Sergio Aguero.

However, the Argentine could not leave the club as he still had a year of contract left and no club would have been able to match the massive release clause. The Blaugrana and La Liga as an institution threatened to take the matter to court against the Argentine, if he was ready to leave. Messi did not want to ruin the club’s name by taking the matter to court. Instead, he decided to see out his contract that is till summer 2021.

The reason, the former Manchester City forward thinks it is a bad idea for Messi to move there is clearly the overloaded players in attacking positions. In the position that the 33-year-old plays in, Guardiola has a peak Riyad Mahrez in his best years and a 25-year-old Bernardo Silva. He also has former Valencia forward Ferran Torres at his disposal. Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus, Sergio Aguero, Phil Foden, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan are just a few other midfield and attacking players that they have at the Etihad. It will be a very tough choice every week for Guardiola to make. He will have to have a consistent selection process that all the players are satisfied with or else some players might just leave in an unhappy manner.

However, it looks like Leo will be leaving the Nou Camp at the end of the current season with the Manchester side being in the pole position to sign the forward from a financial point of view and the fact that they have Pep as their coach which is a huge factor. Messi being best friends with Sergio Aguero is also a big factor for the Premier League giants. It will surely be an outstanding sight to witness the Argentine magician at the Etihad playing in the premier league.
