Ex-Manchester United star striker calls out club captain Harry Maguire.
Former Dutch international and Manchester United player Robin Van Persie believes Harry Maguire will have to improve leaps and bounds in his distribution of the ball going forward. Surprisingly, it wasn’t Maguire’s sketchy defending that caught the Dutchman’s eye but instead it was his distribution on the ball.
Maguire has had a rough few months both on and off the pitch since even before the new season started, with him getting arrested after a clash with the Greek police while on holiday. What followed was poor performances on the pitch for both club and country, with Maguire being a mere spectator in Tottenham‘s 6-1 thrashing of United and getting sent off for England against Denmark even before the half-hour mark.
The club captain had another dismal performance against Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday in the Champions League, where United lost 2-1 in what was believed to be the easiest game they would face in the group.
Even as Maguire clearly needs to improve his marking and defending off the ball, Van Persie has singled out the Englishman’s distribution as a major area that needs improvement.
Everyone is talking about Maguire being fantastic on the ball, so far he’s not been fantastic on the ball going forward with his passing but that’s not only down to him. Van Persie told BT Sport.
Overall, in some situations – the team is not well positioned. You see Fred coming to take on the ball from the centre-back places – he should not do that, Maguire should do that – he should play in a zone higher up the pitch where it’s more difficult to play but it gives people more options to play.”
“It is not only down to him, you have to make space for each other. He should get options in midfield from the forward players. Do they give him enough options?”
“Sometimes it does click, you could see the midfielders did find the forward players but it’s not consistent enough for the moment. You should always have your runs in behind, you should always have depth in your game and that’s not always the case.”
Manchester United are currently lamenting in 15th place in the league table after six games, having shipped in 13 goals already.
If the Red Devils are to make a resurgence for the top 4 places, they have to stop conceding loose goals and captain Maguire among others has to step up, take charge and be a leader in the team.
