Liverpool are looking to make a January move for defensive reinforcement.
Liverpool are planning to approach for 29-year-old Algerian defender, Aissa Mandi, in January according to Fichajes.
The reigning Premier League champions were linked with the Betis player during the summer, but the transfer window closed with the Algeria international still at Estadio Benito Villamarin.
Mandi has a contract with Betis till the summer of 2022, but with only 18 months remaining in his contract, the Real Betis vice-captain could be available in a cut-price deal should the reds pursue it.
The 29-year-old, who was sent off in this weekend’s losing effort against Barcelona in La Liga, is in talks with the Spanish club over extending his deal but, as confirmed by the club, those talks have not yet progressed significantly.
The Reds are expected to enter the January transfer market in the hopes of getting a new centre back after losing Virgil van Dijk for the whole season along with the other two senior centre backs being injury prone. Jurgen Klopp has had to play either his midfielders or academy players to fill in for them.
Trent Alexander-Arnold was the latest casualty in the never-ending injury list for the champions, this could force Liverpool to move for Mandi who can play both as a right-back and a centre back.
The defender’s versatility could make him the top target for the club this January who are also reportedly keeping tabs on Perr Schuurs and Milan Skriniar. Schuurs has been impressive with Ajax in this season’s Champions League campaign, especially during the 0-1 loss to Liverpool at Amsterdam ArenA. Meanwhile, Inter Milan’s Skriniar is a wanted man in Europe with multiple European giants, including Barcelona, are interested in securing his signature.
It remains to be seen which defender Klopp secures as they are in desperate need of replacements for their injured defenders to have any chance in this season’s Premier League and Champions League.
