Manchester City and Pep Guardiola to extend their partnership for more seasons.
Josep Pep Guardiola has now been with the English giants for almost five years now. His term at the Etihad has been longer than his period at his previous managerial roles with elite sides like Barcelona and Bayern Munich, where he was at each club for four seasons each. However, according to The Telegraph, he is now close to signing a new deal with Manchester City.
The Catalan coach has 7 months left with the City Group and it looks like he is not done yet. Multiple reports are now suggesting that he is going to stay at the club for a longer period of time, ideally hoping to secure the Champions League that he is yet to achieve outside of Barcelona.
Manchester City have won the Premier League two times under Pep Guardiola inside 4 seasons. They are still one of the favorites to win the league in the 2020/21 season too. The Citizens also won the Carabao Cup two times and the FA Cup one time under the Catalan, along with two community shields.
City’s main goal has always been to win the Champions League and that was one of the main reasons as to why Guardiola was brought on. However, he has not achieved the feat after always dropping out of the tournament in the quarterfinal stages. He had a similar issue at Bayern Munich as he failed to win the Champions League despite winning every German achievement possible. The Spanish coach has just won the European trophy with his golden Barcelona side, which he himself has credited to the amazing talent that was at his disposal.
The former Bayern coach has already ended up trophyless for two seasons as he failed to win any major accolades during the 2016/17 season and 2019/20 season. However, he did win the community shield last year against Jurgen Klopp’s men who have been his biggest problem. The rivalry between Klopp’s Liverpool and Pep’s Manchester City has been taken to another level as the two sides are constantly going after each other in some way or the other since their arrival. City have succeeded on some occasions and so have Liverpool.
However, it looks like the Spaniard will extend his stay at Manchester City as it looks like he is not satisfied without winning European recognition. He has repeatedly stated on multiple occasions that he will only stay if the club staff and board members are satisfied with him and that he will not stay if he does not fulfill the demands of the club. It does not look like City will have a problem with such a top coach staying on their side, especially with Lionel Messi being tipped to join them next season. Pep Guardiola and his men will look to go again this season for the Champions League and try to win like they do every year.
