Manchester United join the race to sign star defender Raphael Varane.

Manchester United have the opportunity to sign French international and Real Madrid star man Raphael Varane for below 100 million Euros, Manchester Evening News have reported.

Almost a decade after having the chance to sign him as an 18-year old, United have again got a chance to secure the elite defender’s services, with Sir Alex claiming later that the deal would’ve gone through in 2011 if not for a late intervention by Zinedine Zidane who convinced the Frenchman to join the Los Blancos instead. The Red Devils then had to settle by signing Phil Jones from Blackburn at the time.

The English giants had another chance to sign Varane in 2018 under manager Jose Mourinho but considered him unattainable as his valuation was too high, definitely north of 100 million Euros, as a then 25-year old World cup winner with France and a 4x Champions League winner with the Spanish giants.

Varane’s deal with Real Madrid runs till 2022, meaning he still has 18 months left on his current contract and is only 27 years of age, which is considered to be the prime of one’s footballing career. The Spanish club would surely be looking to keep him but it would be a huge scoop for United if they manage to convince the Frenchman to come to Old Trafford instead. The star center-back also just switched agents to join Base Soccer recently, a company United have a good relationship with, which could help play a part in further proceedings.

The Frenchman’s form however has been dreadful lately, his awful performance in last season’s Champions League round of 16 against Manchester City saw Los Blancos crash out of the coveted competition.

This season hasn’t been much better either, with Varane having shipped in 15 goals in the 10 games he has featured and having tallied two own goals in the last month. His recent performances led Karim Benzema’s former agent to say:

Since the Manchester City match, He [Varane] has been a shadow of himself.”

Poor form, along with Madrid failing to win the CL these past two seasons, has caused Varane to drop in value. Manchester United may as well be the ones to take advantage and secure the services of the Frenchman and bring stability and leadership to their back-line.
