Manchester United keen on sticking with David de Gea
Manchester United has had problems in many positions in recent years but the team has been dependent upon its goalkeeping most in the last decade. Sir Alex Ferguson bought David de Gea from Atletico Madrid in 2011 as a replacement for legendary goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar. The young Spaniard struggled in his first season in the Premier League but quickly became an important part of the squad.
The 30-year-old has won a record 4 times Manchester United Player of the Year award and it shows the impact of the player at the club in the past few seasons. The Spain international has also featured in PFA Team of the Year for a record 5 times. However, at the start of the 2015/16 season, De Gea was heavily linked with Real Madrid but the deal failed on the deadline day. The Spanish goalkeeper was a very good professional and he signed a contract extension later and was an integral part of the team of the next 2 seasons.
The Spaniard holds the record for most clean sheets for Manchester United and will be hoping to break Peter Schmeichel’s record of most clean sheets in Manchester United’s history. Both de Gea and his agent have put his failed move to the Los Blancos behind them and according to the reports by Goal, the player has stated he is happy at the club and he is willing to stay at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have struggled for the past two seasons due to the bad form of their number one. However, the inclusion of Dean Henderson in the squad this season has boosted the Spaniard’s confidence and the competition for the number one spot. The goalie has had a good start to the season and was awarded the man of the match away to Paris Saint-Germain. He also kept a clean sheet against Chelsea. The Manchester United number one is a fan favorite and the team will be banking on his form this season.
