Liverpool in need of a major defensive campaign
Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge believes Jurgen Klopp is facing ‘mission impossible’, following injuries to several first-team players. Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both set to miss the entirety of the season, while Fabinho, Trent Alexander Arnold, Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara are all out injured for the time being.
The reigning Premier League champions have remained competitive on multiple fronts in 2020-21 but will have to weigh up their options heading towards another transfer window in January.
The Irish striker, Aldridge, who went onto score fifty times for the reds believes Jurgen Klopp now has to bring in a new center-back. Speaking to Sunday World, Aldridge said that Liverpool have reached a new low,
Just when Jurgen Klopp dared to believe that he could navigate his way to success without Virgil van Dijk, he suddenly finds himself staring at mission impossible. The injury to Joe Gomez has plunged Liverpool into turmoil. While it looked like they were finding a way to win without van Dijk, the defensive issues have now reached breaking point.
Unfortunately, Gomez’s situation cannot be solved quickly and, when you throw in the reality that Joel Matip also has fitness worries, there is only one solution left. Liverpool need to make their move to bring in a central defender now.”
He also admits it won’t be easy for the Reds to get a new center-back for a reasonable price given everyone in Europe knows Liverpool are in dire need of bringing in defensive reinforcements.
Liverpool have eleven games to play in total before the January transfer window opens, starting with the league leaders Leicester City who currently have 1 more point than them. They also have games against Tottenham, Wolves, and Crystal Palace during the run of fixtures, who will all look to exploit them.
Jurgen Klopp already has his work cut-out and will look to get out the coming festive period with as many points as possible and hopefully get his desired target in January.
Liverpool have been recently linked with the likes of Perr Schuurs, David Alaba, Milan Skriniar, Dayot Upamecano, Kalidou Koulibaly, it will be interesting to see whether one of them do make their move to Anfield or Liverpool end buy buying no one as reported earlier.
