Manchester City are keen on securing Lionel Messi in January.
Lionel Messi had shocked the whole Barcelona fan base by handing in a transfer request in the 2020 summer transfer window in the hopes of joining Manchester City. However, the request did not go according to plan as the Argentine was debarred from leaving as he was committed to another year’s contract with the Blaugrana, on paper.
Both La Liga and Barcelona stated that the matter would go to court if the Argentine pushed to leave the club or the league in the summer transfer window of 2020. Hence, Lionel Messi changed his mind and decided to stay put at the Nou Camp in order to save the club’s name from being ridiculed in the media. The Argentine did not want this case to go to court and create a whole different issue hence, he decided to stay with the Catalans for one more year to fulfill his commitment to the club.
During this saga, there was only one club that was heavily linked with the Barcelona captain and that is Pep Guardiola‘s Manchester City. The owners and board members reportedly came up with a whole strategy to swoop the magician off of Barcelona and bring him in to play under his former manager. However, due to Lionel Messi’s decision, this move did not happen.
Multiple reports are now suggesting that the Citizens are plotting a move for the Argentine in January. Given that Messi’s contract is up in six months, the citizens feel that they can make a move during the winter transfer window of 2021. Manchester City secured Guardiola’s services for another two years as the Catalan signed a new deal just a couple of days ago. This decision is said to really boost the Spaniard’s chances of reuniting with Messi again like the old days.
Hence, the Manchester side are looking to move in on the Argentine over the January transfer window. The Catalan giants need funds for their transfer and a move for Messi six months prior to the end of his contract can get the Blaugrana a good deal. On top of the hefty transfer fee that City might be prepared to spend on Leo, Barca could also free up Messi’s wages which will be of great help as they currently struggle with a financial crisis.
