German centre-back Niklas Sule reportedly “dreams” of joining Manchester United.
English giants, Manchester United have been handed a massive boost in their search for a distinguished centre-back in the transfer market after BILD‘s Christian Falk tweeted: ‘True: Niklas Sule dreams of playing for @ManUtd one day.’
The Red Devils’ defending has been wretched this new Premier League season, conceding 14 goals in their 8 games so far, which included a club record-equaling 6-1 drubbing by Tottenham at home. Their back-line can be considered shaky at best, showing signs that a couple or more signings are definitely necessary to help solidify that defence, and getting Sule would be a huge step in the right direction.
With United now playing out from the back with players lacking the technical attributes to play precise passes under pressure, especially against the smaller teams, the opposition is no longer scared to get at them and press high up the pitch.
Without the ball as well, they haven’t looked very composed or stable. The players seem to be all over the place, out of position or not marking their man well, conceding easily preventable goals. World record signing (for a defender) and club captain Harry Maguire’s positioning has been shambolic at times, but he isn’t the only one to blame. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had to deploy two defensive midfielders in the form of Fred and Scott McTominay to help shield the defence and prevent the goals leaking in.
United are clearly crying out for a leader in defence and Niklas Sule could be that man. The 25-year-old, whose contract expires in 2022, helped Bayern win the League, Cup and the Champions League treble last season.
But having made only 16 appearances in all competitions for the Bavarian side last season, the 6’5″ defender is in limbo at the club now with David Alaba the preferred choice in the centre of defence after teenage sensation Alphonso Davies’ emergence at left-back.
Solskjaer is said to be looking to offload the likes of Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Timothy Fosu-Mensah to other clubs and so the timing couldn’t be more perfect for the Red Devils, who could then use the funds to sign Sule, the answer to their defensive woes.
