Chelsea ready to offer a new and extended contract to veteran Thiago Silva.

Last year Chelsea were in a bit of an awkward situation, while their attack was well above average, ending up as the third-highest scoring team of the season, their defense was less than spectacular. That is putting things very nicely, in truth the defense was a mess, Marcos Alonso could not maintain his wing, Antonio Rudiger was struggling after his injury and Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen kept on making avoidable mistakes. That added with a goalkeeper who lost all his confidence was a recipe for disaster. The Blues ended up conceding 54 goals, the most in the top half of the table.

Frank Lampard realized that they had to fix their defensive problems if they were to progress further this season thus the English manager decided to bring in a new goalkeeper and a veteran center-back who can act as a leader and a mentor to the other defenders. Thiago Silva was the perfect choice to fulfill the role. The Brazilian defender came in as a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain and brought with him, a plethora of experience. Silva has won over 20 major trophies with PSG over the eight years with the side and decided to try out the Premier League before hanging up his boots for good.

Chelsea gave him the opportunity to fulfill this dream of his and he has not disappointed the club. Although he had a shaky start and there was a communication barrier between him and the other defenders, he is now beginning to settle in. The club has only conceded one goal in four league games when the 36-year-old has been in the lineup. He has made a good partnership with new goalkeeper, Eduardo Mendy, who is also from Ligue 1.

His growing confidence and leadership skills are becoming more prominent now and the club has decided that they are more than satisfied with his performances. The player joined on a 12 months contract with a clause to extend that if the club liked his performance and it seems that although only nine league games have been played, the London side is already willing to extend his stay in England.
