Manchester United make 21-year old Braga defender an important transfer target.
Elite teams around the continent have started slowly understanding the importance of a defensive stalwart in the team. After Liverpool saw their winning exploits raised to a new level by the arrival of a certain Virgil van Dijk, teams now have started prioritizing defensive reinforcements too. Instead, it has become clear that there is currently a shortage of top-class defenders on the market, meaning prices have sky-rocketed as the top sides scramble to secure the signatures of those who could transform their backline.
David Carmo is reportedly the latest highly-rated young centre back option in the transfer market. He has been leading Braga as far as a current second place in the Portuguese Liga NOS. He has been earning rave reviews since breaking into the Portuguese side’s first-team midway through the 2019-20 campaign.
Braga have made an excellent start to the campaign and Carmo has been at the center of it all. Goal have reported that Manchester United have been most heavily linked, but reports suggest that other Premier League sides are also keen, while top teams from around the continent are also monitoring Carmo’s progress.
At the age of 13, Carmo was released by Benfica, with the Lisbon giants believing that the teenager was too short to make the grade at the highest level.
According to sources, the decision left him “psychologically shaken”, and it was only through the support of his parents that he was able to pick himself back up and continue chasing his dream. Although David stands 6 feet 5 inches tall now it’s visible why he has been compared to Virgil.
It now seems a matter of time before Carmo departs the picturesque Estadio Municipal de Braga, with Roma having already failed in a bid to sign the physical centre-back. Despite agreeing to initial talks, Braga rejected the offer, and have since moved to ensure they get a fair price for their prized defensive asset by inserting a 40 million euros worth release clause into the new contract that the 21-year-old signed during the recent international break.
Carmo is certainly proof that constant determination pays off. Whether he can have a Van Dijk-esque impact remains to be seen. But he is unlikely to be the last young star to be compared to the Dutch defensive behemoth.
