Liverpool youngster’s playstyle modeled after legend, Steven Gerrard

It’s not the first time Liverpool fans have been excited about a scouser wearing the no.17 shirt. A number that was formerly worn by Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard, before switching to the iconic number eight jersey in 2004.

The no. 17 jersey now belongs to a certain teenager hailing from Liverpool, Curtis Jones. Jones who has represented his boyhood club in every age level has put in some superb performances this season.

The England twenty-one international who has been hailed as ‘one of the most exciting talents in England’ by former Leipzig manager, Ralf Ragnick, has already played twelve times this season thanks to the current injury crisis Liverpool are going through.

Trent Alexander-Arnold signifies the trust placed in young players at Anfield having already played 145 times for the club and is still just 22 years old. Jones appears to be following in his footsteps and the praise for the 19-year-old is well deserved as he makes his breakthrough in the 2020/21 season.

It wasn’t long ago when players like Jay Spearing and Jon Flanagan were considered as the next big things for Liverpool; things have drastically changed since then and Liverpool fans could finally say they have an heir to Steven Gerrard.

Jones, who has always modeled his game based on Gerrard, has been on Jurgen Klopp’s books for many years now, his manager has labeled him as the cross between Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana.

Speaking to Danny Murphy for talkSPORT, Jones said:

“I’ve not really ever compared myself to another player. I would always say that my style of play is similar to players that have a bit of flair in a game, to be confident on the ball and stuff. To be referred to as [similar to] Mane and Lallana, wow!”

It looked like Jones would be warming the bench most of the time at the start of this season after Liverpool decided to bring in Thiago Alcantara from Bayern and Gini Wijnaldum decided to stay. However. thanks to the injury crisis Liverpool are currently going through where the likes of Thiago, Oxlade, Keita, and Henderson got injured, up stepped the Liverpool U-23 captain to fill in the void.

He has put in some incredible performances this season. His goal against Ajax helped Liverpool finish as group winners in the Champions League.

The Liverpool hierarchy has high hopes from Jones and he will certainly hope to continue his good form. If he continues his form, Klopp might very well have a headache of whom to choose once the likes of Keita, Thiago, and Oxlade return.
