Liverpool joins Premier League giants in race for superstar
Liverpool have reportedly joined Chelsea and Manchester United in the race for Cagliari defender, Sebastian Walukiewicz. That’s the claim from Italian publication Corriere dello Sport.
The Polish international has been a regular starter for the Italian club this season making ten appearances in all competitions.
Walukiewicz, who is described by Cagliari fans as being ‘majestic in the air’, was tipped to have a big future a couple of years ago when he impressed at the U20 World Championship, and it seems he is beginning to make his mark in senior football.
The 20-year-old put pen to paper on a new contract with the Sardinian side this week, but that has not ended the interest in him from elsewhere. The article suggests Cagliari would demand a fee in the region of 54 million pounds which could see the English clubs end their interest.
Inter are also said to be interested in Walukiewicz and could make the move for him should Milan Skriniar leave the club in the upcoming transfer window, with a move to Tottenham very likely.
Liverpool are in dire need of defensive reinforcements this season after losing the likes of Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez for the majority of this season. Jurgen Klopp has needed to rely on Fabinho and the academy stars Rhys Williams and Nat Philipps to fill in from time to time.
It is not a surprise to see another defender being linked with Liverpool. Walukiewicz would probably be a more unlikely addition in January than some of the other names that have been in the papers which include the likes of Perr Schuurs, Dayot Upamecano, and Kalidou Koulibaly.
That said, he is making a big impression in Serie A for a mid-table club like Cagliari and is a name worth keeping an eye on for the future.
