Liverpool ready to part with two stars in transfer season

Liverpool are prepared to let go of Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi in the January Transfer Window in order to raise funds according to ESPN. The addition of Diogo Jota and the January signing of Takumi Minamino have added more options in the attack for the Premier League champions. That has seen both Origi and Shaqiri get fewer minutes this season.

Shaqiri has also been suffering from constant niggles this season which has seen him miss the majority of the games up till now, while the addition of twenty-three-year-old Jota has meant Origi has got to start only three games this season. The Belgian has only played one minute in the Premier League up till now.

Shaqiri played pivotal roles in the Premier League win against West Ham United and the Champions League win against Midtjylland. However, he hasn’t played for the Reds since the previous international break due to the series of injury issues he has suffered since then.

Both Origi and Shaqiri played crucial roles for Klopp during the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League campaign, which the Reds won. Origi scored twice in the sensational comeback against Barcelona in the second leg of the semi-final at Anfield, while Shaqiri assisted one of Georginio Wijnaldum‘s goals that day. Origi also scored the second goal to seal the win in the 2019 Champions League final in Madrid, where Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0.

This season, though, even with all the injury problems Liverpool have had, they have been reasonably stacked in attacking positions. Jota, especially, has been a revelation, hitting the ground running after his move from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer.

Liverpool’s injury crisis this season has forced Jurgen Klopp to look for defensive reinforcements and the club would be willing to let go of their star duo in order to fund a transfer for a centre-back, with the club down to only one senior centre-back option in Joel Matip.
