The 20-year-old had his breakthrough season last year when he made his debut for the club. The Manc born made more than forty appearances for the club last season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. However, with the arrival of Brazilian left-back Alex Telles, the England u21 defender has struggled to get game time this season.
Manchester United have both Telles and Luke Shaw fit now and Williams may struggle to appear in the team sheet. The loan deal will benefit all the parties. The England defender will get enough game time and Premier League experience and it will help in the development of the player. The Saints can also dream of getting a European spot with a better squad strength.
Southampton manager, Ralph Hassenhuttl, has expressed his desire to get the young Manchester United defender. Soton recently suffered a setback against Manchester United in the Premier League. United Boss, Solskjaer has good relations with the Soton boss and the deal is likely to happen in the January transfer window.
The arrival of Williams will provide competition to Ryan Bertrand for the left-back spot. The English defender can also play as a right-back, so he can cover for both Bertrand and Kyle Walker Pieters. Williams has a lot of potential as a player and with the right guidance, he can reach a higher level.
