PL giants Manchester United are all set to sign Saul Niguez from Atletico.
The Spanish International has been on United’s radar for quite a while, and it seemed like the English club had got their man in the summer this year, with Saul briefly hinting at a move away from the Spanish club saying he would “announce” his new club in a few days, and also following several of the United players on social media platform Instagram, sending Man Utd fans into a frenzy. But no such transfer came to be, in what was an already disappointing transfer window for the Old Trafford outfit as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer failed to sign many of his desired transfer targets.
Saul has been rated as one of the best central/defensive midfielders in Europe. Hailed for his consistency and high levels of work rate, the man from Elche, Spain is thriving under Argentine manager, Diego Simeone at Atletico.
The 26-year-old has been an integral cog in Simeone’s midfield, making that central midfield role his own and doing a stellar job at it, shielding the defense and also popping up with important goals and assists from time to time.
After coming through Atletico Madrid’s youth academy, he’s gone on to appear in more than 300 competitive matches for the club, scoring 41 goals and providing 18 assists in all competitions. Not bad for a deep-lying midfielder, who’s primary job is to intercept attacks and break up the play.
Niguez is contracted to Los Rojiblancos till 2026, with a release clause of £135m(€150m) that United will seemingly have to pay to get their man. But with the financial crisis clubs are facing during these pandemic hit times, a sum of around €70m would be deemed sufficient for The Red Devils to close the deal.
The entire deal hinges on Manchester United offloading Paul Pogba to either of the interested clubs, Juventus and Real Madrid, in order to free up funds to get Saul. The Frenchman’s contract runs out in 18 months’ time, which means time is of the essence for the club if they are to get any value out of selling Pogba.
