Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo World Cup 2022 saga
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have won every possible trophy at club level but both of them are yet to add the World Cup in their illustrious careers. The Argentine lost the final to Germany in 2014. Messi and Ronaldo are regarded as the greatest footballing rivalry duo in the history of the game and both of them have won multiple league titles and Champions Leagues but have failed to deliver the biggest trophy in international football.
The next edition of the FIFA World Cup will be in 2022 in Qatar and by that time the Argentina legend will be 35 and the Portugal icon will be 37 and the fans are looking forward to watching them play at the greatest show on earth for one last time. Argentina have not won a major trophy in 26 years and the fans will be looking forward to seeing Messi deliver the all prestigious World Cup, after coming so close previously but being let down by his team. Lionel Messi might have surpassed Diego Maradona’s legacy at club football level but his failure to win any silverware with the national team has certainly put a black mark on his great footballing career.
Ronaldo won the Euro Cup in 2016 and the Nations League in 2019 but the Portuguese legend might not be satisfied until he has his hands on the World Cup. He is certainly considered the greatest footballer in Portugal’s history ahead of Eusebio and Luis Figo. The Juventus forward will be hoping to deliver one last moment of happiness to his countrymen before he hangs up his boots.
The next edition of the World Cup will certainly be the duo’s last appearance in the tournament. Both of them will be playing their fifth FIFA World Cup having made their debuts in the 2006 edition. The football fans will be witnessing the greatest rivalry in football history for one last time on the international stage.
