Barcelona midfield target rejects contract renewal with Liverpool.
Liverpool’s trip to Southampton ended in disappointment as the team suffered a 1-nil loss, courtesy of a goal by former Liverpool player, Danny Ings. Jurgen Klopp has had several problems this season due to injury issues and defenders, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, having been ruled out of the season. Liverpool’s problems have gotten worse as reports by Todofichajes suggest that Dutch midfielder, Georginio Wijnaldum, has rejected a contract extension and will likely leave the club next summer as a free agent.
The 30-year-old has been one of the most important players in the Klopp era and his two goals against Barcelona secured a spot in UEFA Champions League final for the Merseyside club. Wijnaldum is likely to reunite with his former national team manager, Ronald Koeman at FC Barcelona next season. The Dutch manager wanted the player this summer but the move was blocked by the English club.
Gini Wijnaldum will be an excellent addition to the Barcelona squad and will bring a lot of experience to the side. The talented midfielder can play a number of roles including central midfielder, mezzala, and in a double pivot. Wijnaldum’s hold up play is excellent and he just needs to better his passing. Klopp will not be very pleased to lose this key player next summer. The English side brought Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich this summer but he has been sidelined for the majority of his time at Anfield. Captain Jordan Henderson and Fabinho played as center backs against the Saints and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain was introduced in midfield along with the Spaniard and Gini.
Liverpool need to bring in reinforcements in the winter transfer window as most of their key players are out injured including summer signing Diogo Jota. Liverpool board and Jurgen Klopp will be having trouble replacing the Dutch international if he decides to leave the club at the end of his current contract.
