RB Leipzig says that they will sell Upamencano if it makes sense financially.
One of the brightest young players in Europe right now is Dayot Upamencano. The 22-year-old French center-back has gained the attention of a number of elite clubs from all around Europe. While any club would want to keep a hold of such a brilliant asset, RB Leipzig are taking a different route. Instead of trying their level best to keep their best players, they are actively looking to sell them if it makes sense to them in a financial manner. This makes it easy for clubs such as Liverpool, Manchester United, and even Chelsea to try and acquire the player’s signature as his current club will not be fighting to keep him in.
According to the CEO of RB Leipzig, Oliver Mintzlaff, the club has a very deep squad depth and thus they can choose to sell a few of their top performers if it will be a financial benefit for them. This is not the first time they are letting go of key players either. Most notably, selling Timo Werner to Chelsea for only 47.5 million pounds. The English side paid his release clause and Leipzig did not even attempt to try and keep the player. Other top performers such as Matheus Cunha, Naby Keita, and Diego Demme, were all sold to rival clubs.
In an interview with SportBild(via Goal), Mintzlaff said,
“We have a squad that is very broad in terms of quality.”
“So we will sell top performers again if it makes financial sense and we can cope with it from a sporting point of view. “
He goes on to show the profits they have already been making with their performances. The squad that they are currently boasting was worth 250 million euros when they made their debut however, now the same squad is worth 550 million euros. On paper and business-wise, it’s a success but if they want to become league winners or even European winners, they will need to hold on to some of their main players.
That does not seem to be the philosophy that the German club is following, however, and we might very well find Upamencano along with other stars such as Marcel Sabitzer, in the Premier League next season. While the center-back is being pursued by Liverpool and Manchester United, the midfielder has been linked with Arsenal as well as with Tottenham Hotspur. The Red Devils seem to be leading the race nonetheless.
