David James believes that it might be time for Manchester City to let go of Aguero.
According to former Manchester City goalkeeper, David James, his former club must let go of one of their legends, Sergio Aguero. The striker who is the English side’s top goalscorer is 32 years of age and it is time that City makes a very important decision. Aguero is not getting any younger and each season, he is sidelined due to injury. While he is a prolific goal scorer and is still capable of winning the golden boot, provided he stays fit, Pep Guardiola no longer requires his services and thus should let him go if another club wants him.
Sergio Aguero, first of all, is not only a Manchester City legend but also a Premier League legend. The Argentine forward has scored 180 goals in the English top-flight alone. This leaves him behind only Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney, and Andrew Cole in terms of goals. This proves his uncanny ability to get goals consistently and help the team but due to his age, Guardiola has decided to drop him from the team. James believes that the best of Aguero’s years are behind him and should thus be allowed to leave. In an interview with Stadium Astro, he said,
“As much as he is a Manchester City legend and a dangerous threat, he spends a lot of time injured, he isn’t always the top scorer in the Premier League, and I think Manchester City are slowly trying to find that instinct where multiple high goalscorers are more important than one outstanding goalscorer.”
He went on to say that the Argentine is no longer needed at Manchester and that if any other clubs, like Paris Saint-Germain are showing interest in the player, Guardiola should sell him off or let him go. Since the player is in the last six months of his contract, it would be more respectful if they let him stay till the end of the season and give him a farewell game, rather than selling him off for extra funds.
With the Argentine striker gone, Pep can also play with a false nine rather than a dedicated striker. Gabriel Jesus can fill in the spot quite nicely and this would open up a whole new dimension to their team. Instead of being dependent on a single player for goals, several players are now scoring for City and it is showing. Phil Foden is City’s top scorer with eight goals in all competitions. Aguero’s loss will be sad for the club but they have already adapted into a team that can play without him and thus should PSG approach the player, they should just let him go.
