Southampton secured attacking midfielder Takumi Minamino on loan in a last-minute deadline day deal. The Japanese arrived at Liverpool from RB Salzburg after impressing in the Champions League last year and was expected to give competition to the starters. Minamino ended up with a Premier League medal last season with just enough appearances under the belt, but has not been getting consistent chances and swooped upon a loan move to Southampton.
Gaffer Ralph Hassenhutl spoke to Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp, as reported by Goal, and revealed his plans for Takumi that were integral to his league campaign.
I spoke with Jurgen, he said he didn’t have the chance to give Minamino enough time to play. I’m sure when he played, he did good games and scored a few goals.”
The German also spoke about how he thinks Minamino is a special player and has qualities to thrive upon.
He’s a very special player for me – not because of his physical strength but more of his way of playing football. He is very quick in his mind, has good decision-making, knows about our pressing style and hopefully a lot of running.”
Minamino will get his due minutes in Southampton.
Liverpool and Southampton share an excellent relationship in terms of transfers, and we have often seen players going either way. One of the bright examples being the transfer of Danny Ings who has been one of the primary goalscorers for the Saints and was in scintillating form last season too.
On being enquired about the tactical adjustments and traits of his new signing, he praised the Japanese man commending his playstyle.
He knows when you come to me you have to run a lot, but that’s not a problem for him. Although he didn’t play a lot in the past games, he’ll also need time to step up – but we had a good experience with Theo, who helped us immediately, and hopefully he does the same.”
Klopp will be hoping to see Takumi impressing for Southampton and in due time at Anfield as well.
