Manchester City have been playing some amazing football this season. City finished second last season but have been a huge force this season and are on their way to regain the Premier League title. City faced current champions Liverpool in the Premier League and beat the home side 1-4 where young Phil Foden and Ilkay Gundogan put on excellent performances at Anfield. City’s victory against Liverpool marks their first win at Anfield since 2003 and the curse finally ends for the Manchester club.
The sky blues are top of the table with a game in hand and are five points clear of second-place Manchester United. The table-toppers are without Kevin De Bruyne and have missed talisman Sergio Aguero for the majority of the season. Pep Guardiola started the center-back pair of John Stones and Ruben Dias against Liverpool. City played some eye-catching football and was awarded a penalty when Raheem Sterling was fouled by the Brazilian Fabinho. However, Gundogan could not convert from the spot and added his name along with Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez to miss spot-kick against Liverpool in recent fixtures.
The German got his chance of redemption in the game and gave City the deserving lead. Mohamed Salah equalized from the spot and took his side back to the game but two errors from Alisson Becker allowed City to regain their lead and add an insurance goal. England midfielder Foden scored a screamer and put the final nail in the coffin. Both Foden and Gundogan have been excellent along with Bernardo Silva. England coach Gareth Southgate will be having a tough job selecting the 23-man squad.
Phil Foden has been in fine form this season and is likely to make England’s squad for Euro 2021 but the competition is quite high. Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish, James Maddison, Mason Mount are also some of the options for Southgate.
