Lionel Messi’s decision to send in an official request to leave the club was one of the biggest news in footballing history. The Argentine who had been at the club since he was only 13 years old, was considered as their most loyal player and thus to see him try to force a move out was quite shocking. One of the club’s who immediately got to work on the Messi scenario was Manchester City. The English club was very close to signing him as well but after some legal complications, they had to back out. Now the Citizens will once again try for the world’s best player as he is down to only five months in his current contract with Barcelona.
Manchester City have been the club that most people have linked the six-time Ballon d’Or winner to, as the club brags Messi’s old manager, Pep Guardiola. The Spanish genius has turned the sky blues into an unstoppable machine and they have dominated the Premier League, apart from last year when they surrendered it to an amazing Liverpool. However, City are back on their feet with a 14 match winning streak. Guardiola’s team looks like the most dangerous team in Europe at the moment and he would love to have his former player win the UEFA Champions League with him.
Manchester City planning to hold talks with Lionel Messi in March or April.
According to ESPN, the 33 year old has stayed in touch with his former coach who has already proposed City’s winning plans to him and was on a verge to accepting the offer last year. However, after the failure of his transfer request, Messi decided to stay at Barcelona for the last season of his contract and give his very best to the club he loves. The player’s contract expires on 30th June 2020 at which point clubs are free to contact him. City seems the most likely although they have been quiet about their plans. They have done thorough research and are ready to talk with the magician again in March or April.
Paris Saint-Germain on the other hand have been very vocal about their desire for the player and this might come around to hurt them as the player is a very quiet person who does not enjoy media exposure. This could also give the Citizens an advantage in signing the player. Last but not the least, the player could also decide to remain with the Catalans as they have significantly improved but there is no way that the club can keep paying him 138 million euros a season and he will have to take a hefty wage cut if he does stay on at Barcelona.
