Chelsea had a good first season under club legend Frank Lampard but one department where they were severely lacking, was in the defense. They had three center-backs yet none of them could keep a good backline. Thus, when Paris Saint-Germain’s Thiago Silva announced that he would be leaving the French Champions in order to experience football elsewhere, the Blues were quick to snap him up. A player like Silva was exactly what they needed, strong, bold, and had a lot of experience. The Brazilian in a recent interview revealed that he was instantly welcomed by Lampard through a very special gift.
Although Chelsea have not had the best of starts to the season, the 36-year-old has enjoyed himself. He has already made 21 appearances in all competitions and also scored two goals. There have already been talks about extending his contract with the Blues plus he has also gotten his old manager from PSG, Thomas Tuchel, back. While Silva enjoys having Tuchel back as his manager, he is also missing Lampard with whom he had made a great relationship.
Silva recalls how Chelsea’s ex-manager made him feel welcome at the club.
Both Lampard and Silva are Veterans at the game and even played each other a few times. In an interview with FourFourTwo(via Goal), the Brazilian center-back said that he did not have to think much before accepting the Chelsea job and almost immediately agreed when he heard that the West-London side was interested in his services. He also said that he had a great rapport with Lampard and was touched by the gift that the former Chelsea coach gave him on his arrival. He said in the interview,
“As soon as I said yes, he sent me a picture of us both shaking hands as national team captains in 2013,”
“It was a nice surprise. He understood exactly what I needed at this stage of my career, probably because he had made a similar move when he was also 36, from Chelsea to Manchester City.
Lampard was unfortunately sacked a few weeks ago due to a bad phase at the club, results-wise. It has also been rumored that he lost the trust of the locker room but he was shown tremendous support from players such as Tammy Abraham, Reece James, Mason Mount, Thiago Silva, etc. There have been a lot of mixed responses following his sacking but now Tuchel is the new manager and it is the player’s duty to follow his tactics and try to secure a UEFA Champions League spot.
