World Cup winning defender Jerome Boateng is closing in on agreeing to a deal with Chelsea as per reports from Todofichajes. The German has been a target for Chelsea for quite some time. Ex-manager Frank Lampard was an admirer of him and the situation continues to be so under new boss, Thomas Tuchel. Bayern Munich were about to facilitate his departure last window, but uncertain conditions led to the breakage of the deal.
The latest reports are that the deal is confirmed and will be official soon enough. Boateng is in the last year of his contract at Allianz Arena. Bayern haven’t been defensively as solid as they were last season and have already tried multiple center pairings. Partner David Alaba is also in his final year of the contract and might leave on a free transfer. With coach Hansi Flick preferring Niklas Sule over him, the decision seems long overdue.
Bayern Munich set to offload Boateng.
Boateng has previously played in the Premier League, although not much, for Manchester City. He made his name among the world’s finest defenders at a time at Bayern with whom he managed to win two trebles. His arrival at Chelsea will give Thomas Tuchel another dependable name in the back. The current options beside Thiago Silva seem inconsistent in their form and have leaked goals lately. A veteran and experienced pairing of Silva and Boateng might give the Blues a much-needed boost in their defense.
The only club that were competing for his signature were North London counterparts Arsenal but the Blues have managed to strike a deal. As of now, Chelsea, who were league leaders in the initial stages of the campaign are currently a point behind Liverpool at fifth. They look to bring back their title race hopes after the recent dip of form.
