Chelsea’s big-money signings fail once again as youngsters have to finish the job.
One of the best things that Frank Lampard did for Chelsea during his managerial regime was bring a lot of the academy players into the spotlight. He gave players like Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Reece James, and Billy Gilmour, the chance to prove their worth on the field and they have continued to perform even after the departure of Lampard. However, on the other hand, things have not looked too good for Chelsea’s big-money signings as they continue to misfire and bring themselves under further scrutiny.
Even though Roman Abramovich put nearly 200 million euros into new signings this season, the club did not even look like the better team in their FA Cup Match against Championship team, Barnsley. The west London team were troubled a lot in front of the goal with the Championship team registering 14 shots to Chelsea’s six. Big names such as Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech were unable to get anything productive done the whole game and they were missing the finishing edge.
It looked like the Blues were heading towards a surprise defeat however, their own academy players once again came to the rescue and Abraham scored the only goal of the match in the 64th minute. The goal was the product of a beautiful play created by the Chelsea youths. Gilmour played a fantastic ball to James who rushed forward to put in a great ball for Abraham and the striker just needed to tap it in. However, Tammy also saved the score late on as he made goal-line clearance at the last minute.
The German duo, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz have yet to show their true form and Lampard struggled to get anything out of them but Ziyech who was looking promising has also dropped in form after returning from injury. Pulisic, on the other hand, had a brilliant end to last season but he is yet to perform this season and there is a noticeable drop in quality after his injury as well. Thomas Tuchel needs to bring out the best from them but at the moment, the youths are performing much more than the new signings.
