Bayern Munich have completed the signing of RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, with the France international set to join the German champions on July 1. The 22-year-old has signed a 5-year contract that will keep him at the Allianz Arena till 2026. The financial details of the deal were not revealed by the club but it is widely believed that the Bavarians activated the release clause of 42.5 million pounds in Upamecano’s contract.
Many European clubs including the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, and Liverpool were interested in the young defender but in the end, it was Bayern Munich who got their man.
Bayern Munich’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic expressed his delight in getting the deal over the line:
We’re happy that we’ve been able to sign Dayot Upamecano for Bayern Munich. We’re convinced that Dayot will be a very important member of our team in the coming years,”
We had very good, intensive and professional talks with Dayot and his advisor Volker Struth over many months. We knew we had very tough competition. Upamecano is a young player, 22, whose qualities are already exceptionally developed,”
Upamecano will replace outgoing defender David Alaba in the heart of the defense. Alaba who has spent more than 10 seasons for the German club rejected their latest contract offer and made his intentions clear of leaving the club at the end of this season. The European champions didn’t waste any time to get a replacement and got Upamecano lined up to replace the Austrian superstar.
The Die Roten Bullen have replacements lined up
RB Leipzig also already have a replacement lined up in 19-year-old defender Josko Gvardiol, who will be joining them next season. Reports suggest that the club are also on the verge of completing the signing of Mohamed Simakan from RC Strasbourg in a reported 18 million pound deal.
