The young center-back, Duje Caleta-Car, has been on the radar of Liverpool management for quite some time now. Among a host of clubs that were vying for his signature, Liverpool were the most notable and had an urgent cause. The Reds have their first choice center-back pair Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk out for the season and were looking at Caleta-Car as a solution to their problems.
Ultimately the Croatian ended up staying at Marseille and Pool settled with an Ozan Kabak loan deal from Schalke. Multiple sports media reports speculate that the deal was almost a done one but fell out on the deadline day.
As we understand from Goal, he spoke about the move to media,
It was an honour for me to know that such a club wanted me. We decided with the club that I was going to stay. Marseille is also a great club and I still have a lot of improving to do here.”
Duje Caleta-Car reveals why he didn’t move to Anfield.
The 24-year old arrived at Stade Velodrome from Red Bull Salzburg in 2018 and has been on the rise since then. One of the most consistent and steady performers of the French side, he has already played for them on 130 occasions. With a French domestic cup runners-up medal to his name, there has not been much silverware for him in Marseille. But his quality and potential have never been doubted and the number of clubs that are after him confirms it.
Although Liverpool have missed out on a great talent they signed Kabak and Ben Davies from Preston North instead to make up for their defensive deficit. The Turkish arrival had a not-so-good debut as they lost to Leicester City last weekend in a 1-3 loss. This makes another loss in an already off-course season for the Merseyside club.
