Manchester United faced Newcastle United this weekend in the Premier League and the former had a comfortable 3-1 win and stay in 2nd place behind Manchester City. Goals from Marcus Rashford, Daniel James, and Bruno Fernandes sealed all three points for United. Here are the five talking points from the game.
1. Purple patch for Daniel James.
Daniel James once again put on a good display and scored an important goal and gave United’s lead back in the game. The Welsh winger has been in fine form recently and scored his 5th goal of the season against Newcastle United. James previously scored and assisted in the UEFA Europa League game against Real Sociedad, and the purple patch continues for the 23-year-old.
2. Inspiring performance from David De Gea.
Manchester United number one David De Gea was at top of his game against Steve Bruce’s side. The Spaniard made few important saves and kept his side in the game. De Gea’s position has been in jeopardy after the arrival of academy graduate Dean Henderson. However the Spain international was brilliant against Newcastle and Henderson may have to wait few more seasons to cement his place as the first-choice keeper.
3. Anthony Martial continues to misfire in front of the goal.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have trouble getting Anthony Martial back in form. The Frenchman once again failed to register himself in the score sheet. United was without Edinson Cavani and Martial started as the number nine but the latter’s bad form continues in front of the goal. United needs to get a more consistent goal scorer next season if they want to win the title.
4. Defensive woes continue for Manchester United.
Manchester United once again leaked goals when bad defending from Harry Maguire led Allan Saint-Maximin to score and equalize for Newcastle. Victor Lindelof had a poor game and struggled against the attackers. The Swedish defender lacks physicality and United may look to get another center-back to partner Maguire next season.
5. Impressive performance from Luke Shaw.
Luke Shaw has now created the most chances in the Premier League among the defenders. The English left-back has been in great form this season. Shaw was once again good against Newcastle and made up for his error the last time these two sides faced each other in the Premier League.
