Thiago Silva has been one of Chelsea’s smartest transfers yet. The Brazilian came to the London side as a free agent after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain ran out. The center-back was picked up by Chelsea and Frank Lampard to solve one of the Blues’ biggest problems, their defense. Silva did just that, after a disastrous debut, the veteran center-back showed the club just how much he still had to offer and he has been an integral part of Chelsea’s defense ever since. Of course, he has been out of action for a few weeks now due to his injury but he is expected to be back in action soon.
The 36-year-old has enjoyed his life at Stamford Bridge and he has felt welcomed by the club and the former manager. He was reunited with his previous manager after Lampard was sacked, however, his experience at the club has not changed. He was recently asked in an interview with FourFourTwo, whether he enjoyed the UEFA Champions League more with PSG or with Chelsea and the defender admitted that he liked the tournament better with the English giants as the importance of the tournament is not as high as it was with his former club.
Thiago Silva enjoys the lack of Champions League pressure at Chelsea
He explained that with PSG, the domestic titles meant little to nothing to them as their financial advantage allowed them to dominate the rest of the teams. What the team was really after was the Champions League. The Qatar Sports Investments, PSG’s owners, have poured over a billion euros trying to win the prestigious trophy but they have not been able to win it yet. Silva said in the interview,
It’s no use doing a clean sweep of the domestic titles, as we did a few times, but being knocked out in the last 16 or the last eight of Europe.”
“It always seemed like if that happened, the whole season was s**t – it felt over once we exited the Champions League.” Source- football.london
With Chelsea however, there is a different atmosphere as the league titles are as important as the European ones and the Champions League is not the only trophy that they are fighting for. Indeed the Premier League is the world’s toughest league due to the number of big teams competing for it and it is just the kind of challenge that the Brazilian was looking for. He went on to say,
At Chelsea, however, there’s a very different atmosphere regarding European football. The club has already managed to lift that trophy, and winning the Premier League title is also one of our priorities.”
Silva has been out of action since the thigh injury that he suffered against Tottenham Hotspur. He missed the big game against Atletico Madrid but Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen did quite well in his absence and managed to keep Luis Suarez quiet the entire game. Silva will be hoping to be back on the field soon as he would not want to miss the second leg of this blockbuster game.
