Thomas Tuchel came out to the public and proclaimed that he was not very sure about the Chelsea job at first. Tuchel had just been sacked from his Paris Saint-Germain job a few weeks before he was appointed at the London side and he was obviously going through a lot at that time. Thus, when the club only offered him an 18-month contract, the German coach was unhappy with the length because he thought that the club did not trust him and that’s why is not offering him a lengthier contract. However, he claims that he has learned to overcome that feeling now and he feels more comfortable at the job.
Tuchel explains why he was scared to accept the Chelsea job at first
Tuchel has been an instant hit at Chelsea, he has played eight matches with the team and they have been undefeated so far. After a disappointing debut where the Blues could only muster up a goalless draw, they have now gone on to beat Tottenham Hotspur as well as Atletico Madrid. This proves that the German’s methods are working and things have changed around a lot since the sacking of Frank Lampard. However, in an interview with BT Sport, the 47-year-old said that he did not feel exactly welcomed at the club in the beginning as he thought the owner did not trust him. He said,
At first I didn’t like it, I thought ‘maybe they don’t trust me?'”
“’I have to leave my country, maybe leave my family behind and they are many points behind fourth spot’.”
“Maybe we won’t make it which is still possible because it’s a tough race and it will be easy to sack me again.”- Source: Goal
However, he soon overcame this issue as he understood that Chelsea is a very competitive club that demands good results. It is not a matter of how long the contract is as he could be sacked even if he had a longer contract, should the club not meet expectations. His new form of thinking helped him get over the fear and he decided to just focus on the results than his own future. This has helped him a lot and his team is performing quite well. The German is especially happy with their performance against Atletico as they were extremely professional and earned a tough victory.
He is expected to get a top-four spot with the club and Chelsea are currently fifth on the table, two points behind West Ham. They could secure that Champions League spot and their hopes for the FA Cup are also high. Tuchel needs a bit more time to settle into the club but he has already transformed the team astronomically and if the results continue, he will definitely be staying for more than just 18 months.
