Josep Maria Bartomeu who was previously the president of Barcelona was arrested by the Catalan Police on the first of March. According to SB Nation(via BarcaBlaugranes), the former Blaugrana president was taken in by the police as the reports suggest that he was involved in the ‘Barcagate’ scandal.
Josep Maria Bartomeu was previously a long-term servant of Barcelona. However, after the whole Lionel Messi transfer request saga during the summer transfer window of 2020, he voluntarily resigned. The Catalan gave up his position as president willingly and ever since then the position has been vacant. An election was supposed to be held in the month of January in 2021 to replace Bartomeu but due to coronavirus protocols, the election was postponed. An election will take place this month as one of Toni Freixa, Joan Laporta or Victor Font will emerge victorious, as they are the three favored candidates.

Along with Bartomeu, Oscar Grau who is the club CEO, and Roman Gomez Ponti were also held in detention by the Catalan Police. Former advisor Jaume Masferrer was also taken in by the police. Reports suggest that these four individuals were arrested for money laundering and corrupt administration. These latest claims also allegedly suggest that the Barcelona Police were at the club’s head offices with a search warrant.
Josep stepped down as Barcelona manager in the month of October last year after a vote of no confidence was passed against him and his board of directors. The investigations suggest that the La Liga giants reportedly hired a company last year in order to run a smear campaign against the footballers that played for Barcelona- current or ex. The club resigned their contract with the company called I3 Ventures when these allegations were made and they denied all of the allegations made against them last year.
As of now, Joan Laporta is the favorite to be the future president of the Blaugrana. Only the arrival of the elections this month will decide who it is going to be next.
