The defending La Liga champs produced a lackluster display on Tuesday in a crucial game at Real Sociedad. As the table stands currently, Real Madrid currently sit third in the table as Barcelona lead them on goal difference. A win would have provided much-needed momentum for the Los Blancos ahead of the important clash against leaders Atletico Madrid.
Considering that the Madrid derby will be played in the home ground of Atleti, Wanda Metropolitano, a tough challenge awaits Zidane’s men. With key men like Sergio Ramos, Eden Hazard likely to miss the derby, chances look bleak for the champions. A long injury list and an important match that can possibly decide the title race together sound as intense as it gets. Atleti sit on top of the table with two games in hand, while Barcelona would love a result that gives them a boost for their title race.
Real Madrid in general as a team this season, have been hitting below the bar. Having slipped out in several easy games and considerably easier opponents like Cadiz and other underdogs. A knockout from third division side Alcoyano in the Spanish Cup has further dampened their hopes of silverware.
Another title race till the final game week?
Real Madrid will be happy to have the main striker Karim Benzema back though. Karim has been their chief outlet of attacking output this season with 12 goals already in the league. The situation of wingers in the squad has been alarming. The young trio of Vinicius, Asensio, and Rodrygo has been very underwhelming this season. Rodrygo has been recovering from an injury but the rest have been fit for most of the season and have not been able to contribute to the team as much as desired.
The Whites’ defense has managed to hold their own despite missing captain Ramos and instrumental figures like Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao. Raphael Varane and Nacho have stepped up to the front and will be looking to carry their form to the derby.
