Manchester United hosted AC Milan at Old Trafford for the first leg of the UEFA Europa League round of 16 clash. The game ended in a 1-1 draw and AC Milan got the vital away goal. Ole’s side will now have a huge task at San Siro next week. Here are the three talking points from the game.
1. Poor finishing let them down.
AC Milan might have played better in the game but Manchester United got the better chances in the game and poor finishing let United down. Captain Harry Maguire failed to score a tap-in when Bruno Fernandes flicked the ball from the corner. Daniel James also missed an easy chance from a wonderful pass from Mason Greenwood. The English side should have scored more goals in the game and could have sealed the win. AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made an excellent save from Martial’s early volley attempt in the game.
2. Another injury blow.
Manchester United had another injury blow when Anthony Martial was subbed off at halftime. United is without Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba, and Donny Van De Beek. Martial’s injury will be a huge blow ahead of the West Ham game. Rashford is also likely to miss the game against the in-form Hammers. West Ham will be a tough fixture for the Red Devils given the former’s current form.
3. Amad Diallo made a mark.
Amad Diallo became the 4th youngest goalscorer in Europe for Manchester United. The 18-year-old came on for injured Anthony Martial and scored a wonderful goal from an exquisite pass from Bruno Fernandes. Milan goalkeeper Donnarumma’s bad decision-making was also a factor in the goal but it was a wonderful finish from the young gun. Diallo certainly made a mark with his first United goal and the fans loved it.
Manchester United will travel to San Siro next week and the fixture is a tough one but the English side’s away form has been very good this season and the fans can certainly hope for a positive result from the tie.
