Manchester United had a hard task on their hands in their Europa League match against AC Milan. The Red Devils did just beat the unstoppable Manchester City however, Milan have finally woken up from their long slumber and are looking very dangerous in the league and thus it would take everything from United’s side to beat the Italian giants. The English side managed to take the lead in the 50th minute but could not manage to keep a hold of it and an ex-United legend has come out to say that Dean Henderson is to blame for the last-minute goal.

The Red Devils put up a good fight throughout the game and both teams had similar possession. On paper, the two teams seemed evenly match and the scoreline could not separate them either, however, Milan were the team who deserved the win. From the first minute, the Italian side were going for the win. They had two goals ruled out, one was a clear offside but the other one was a bit more controversial as it seemed like Franck Kessie handled the ball with his arm before lashing a shot to the top left corner. After a VAR check. it was confirmed that the Milan player used his arm to control the ball and thus it was disallowed.

Henderson’s performance critiqued by Manchester United Legend.

When United did take the lead in the 50th minute, they were looking good enough to take the advantage in the first leg however, in the last moments of the game, good delivery from a corner was well matched by Simon Kjaer to give Milan the crucial away goal advantage. Henderson’s attempt to save the header was not good enough and it surely did not please United legend, Paul Scholes, who told BT Sport,

He should save it.”

“I think he’s trying to make it a little bit more difficult than it should be.”

“First and foremost keep the ball out of the net. He should save that, there’s no doubt about it, he’ll know that.” – Source: Goal

The ball was struck quite cleanly by the head however, Henderson probably would have made the save if he just stood his ground. Instead, he tried to dive backward and he did not get a clean connection to the ball with his fist and thus he could not manage the clean sheet. Even Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said later on that Henderson has made those kinds of saves regularly and thus it was disappointing to see him concede from a header like that.

United are now in a bit of peril now as they must score a goal in the next leg at the San Siro. Milan will also be attacking them as one more goal would really put pressure on the English giants. Both the teams will be hoping to bag the Europa League trophy this season and thus we must keep an eye out for the second leg which could give us the winners of the tournament this season.
