Real Madrid have shown the rest of Europe that they are not a side to take lightly this campaign. By ousting a team as formidable and dangerous as Atalanta in the round of 16, they have gained the confidence and belief that’s needed to take them all the way through. Despite being eliminated consequently in the round of 16 in 2019 and 2020, this season, they look stronger with the likes of Thibaut Courtois, Sergio Ramos, Casemiro, and Luka Modric all giving good performances. The other name that needs to be added to this list of players is Karim Benzema.
On Tuesday evening, at the Alfredo Di Steffano stadium, the Frenchman scored his 70th Champions League goal to put his side on course to a 3-1 victory over Atalanta. This ensured Real Madrid a spot in the last 8 as the encounter with the Italian side ended with a 4-1 win on aggregate.

Sergio Ramos also looked in good touch for the Merengues, after a recent knee injury, as he scored the second goal of the night from the penalty spot. The skipper was also seen pleading his manager Zinedine Zidane for more minutes in the pitch as Eder Militao was seen warming up. The manager wanted to protect Ramos’ dicey knee but it seemed like the Spaniard was hungry for game time. This Champions League campaign may well be his last one for Real Madrid as his contract expires at the end of the season.
Ramos and Benzema have won 4 Champions League titles together for the Los Blancos and they would love to win another to take Real Madrid’s tally to a record 14 championships. On the other hand, only Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski, and Raul Gonzalez have scored more times in the competition than the Frenchman. Benzema’s credibility as one of the top strikers of his generation cannot be denied. He has definitely made a stamp with his excellence and class.
