Manchester United have been struggling to play a proper defensive midfielder for a long time now. Scott Mctominay has been good this season but his poor passing accuracy lets him down and many times the Scott fails to provide cover for the back four. United needs to sign a defensive midfielder next season to replace veteran Nemanja Matic. Here are the three possible replacements for the Serbian.
1. Wilfred Ndidi
Wilfred Ndidi is one of the best defensive midfielders in the league and the player has an immense work rate and defensively very solid. The Nigerian along with Youri Tielemanns have been excellent for Leicester City this season and the Foxes are currently 3rd in the Premier League table. Ndidi will be an excellent and long-term replacement for Nemanja Matic and will sort the defensive issues of Manchester United.
2. Sander Berge
Sander Berge is one of the players who is rated by the Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The midfielder is likely to leave Sheffield United at the end of this season as the player has expressed his desire of playing European football. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has rated him highly in the past and the 23-year-old can be a long-term solution for the defensive midfield position at Old Trafford. Berge has made just 13 appearances in the league for Sheffield this season. Sheffield United is currently last in the league table and likely to get relegated and that will lower the asking price of the player. Berge along with Mctominay can form a good midfield duo.
3. Declan Rice
Declan Rice was a long-term transfer target for Chelsea but the interest cooled off after the sacking of Frank Lampard. Manchester United has shown their desire to sign the Englishman in the past and Rice is one of the best defensive midfielders in the league this season. The West Ham man dropped a great performance against United last weekend but was unfortunate to be at the losing end.
